LOL...Networking Won't Get You Far

Relying on networking alone? It’s not enough. Here’s Why You Need a Personal Brand.

Ah, I am so sorry!!

I know I keep saying network, network, network

And how people say “your network is your net worth” or “it’s all about who you know”

But in today’s competitive world, simply knowing the right people won’t cut it.

You need something more: a strong personal brand.

Why networking alone isn’t enough?

Sure, networking can open doors but it’s your personal brand that gets you through them.

  1. Networking only goes so far

Let’s say you get in the room. Now what? Without a solid personal brand, you risk blending into the background. Your personal brand makes you memorable and differentiates you from everyone else.

  2. Your brand speaks when you are not in the room.

A personal brand (when done right) is about what others say about you when you are not around. It is your reputation, your impact, and the way people perceive your value.

A strong brand means opportunities come to you, not just through your network but because of your reputation.

  3. Networking is transactional. Branding is transformational.

Networking is a series of transactions (exchanging info, favors, or intros). But your personal brand is the lasting impression you leave, the value you consistently deliver, and the way you are perceived by others.

  4. A personal brand builds trust and authority.

People are more likely to trust and follow someone who has a clear, strong brand. Whether it is through thought leadership, sharing valuable insights, or consistently delivering results, your brand establishes you as an authority in your field - something networking alone can’t achieve.

No brand is still a brand.

How to build a personal brand that sets you apart?

  1. Identify your unique value proposition

What do you bring to the table that others don’t or can’t? What are your core strengths?

  2. Be consistent in your messaging

Your brand should be consistent with whoever and wherever you go. It builds trust and reinforces your identity int he minds of others. I hope you remember me as the annoying person that keeps telling you to “own your damn career.”

  3. Create and share valuable content

You don’t need to go too crazy over this. But start somewhere. Simple like and comment on Social Media posts go a long way. Did you check out my LinkedIn post today by the way?

  4. Engage authentically

You have to show genuine interest. Authentic engagement goes a long way. Don’t fake it. Don’t have alternative motives. It won’t work out in the long-run.

Networking can only take you so far. To truly stand out and accelerate your career, you need to build a personal brand that speak for you - whether you are in the room or not.

Your brand is what sets you apart. We need you to take advantage of it.

Go start building,

Mary
