Feedback, Let's Have a Candid Conversation

What is the point of feedback? We don't need more of it. Make it work for you, not against you.

Hi there Superstar!

I know you want to be better - whether it be at work, for your health, for your hobby, or for anything you want.

They say the best way to grow and improve is through feedback.

But when does feedback just become noise?

Let's take a manager giving feedback. What is the goal of feedback in this case? To make one a well-rounded employee? To make one be the perfect employee in the eyes of the manager?

Now, what happens if my values do not align with theirs? What happens if I value a happy team who works hard and has fun? What happens if I have a different way of communication where it draws trust and makes my personality shine? Should I be stripped of my values to get better feedback?

Here's what I see:

  • Most managers struggle to deliver non-biased, effective feedback.

  • Employees without a strong sense of purpose or confidence tend to over-emphasize feedback.

  • Feedback often focuses on areas of improvement, whereas, research indicates that doubling down on strengths can be the real game-changer.

What now?

  • View feedback as a roadmap, not gospel. Absorb what you need without taking it to heart.

  • If feedback is vague, ask for it promptly next time (don't wait for feedback cycles) and ask for specifics. Examples are your best friend.

  • Accept the feedback. Do not react if you disagree. Thank them. Process it. Then you can regroup.

In a world where everyone's a critic, your true north star should be your values and purpose. Next time you get feedback, welcome it - sift through it - and let it guide you without losing sight of your authentic self.

You don't need more feedback. You need more confidence.

Stop seeking validation from others.

The world doesn't need more of the same people.

Cheering You On,

Mary F
